Arun Sarin Stepping Down From Vodafone

Mr. Arun Sarin is stepping down as CEO of Vodafone, headquartered in London,which is the world’s largest mobile operator by revenue writes FT. Mr. Sarin has confirmed that he will be stepping down on July 29th, 2008.Vittorio Colao, who is number two at Vodafone will succeed Mr. Sarin as the head of Vodafone.
The news of Mr. Sarin stepping down from Vodafone clearly comes a surprise and the FT describes it as a shock to many in the telecom sector. Stunning is how The Telegraph describes at the sudden departure of Mr. Sarin. The timing of Mr. Sarin’s departure comes as a surprise writes The Washington Post and adds that he helped define Vodafone as a big telecom company.
But, where is Mr. Sarin headed is the question on everyone’ s mind and it looks like he might join a private equity firm according to one news report.
A long time resident of the San Francisco bay area, Mr. Sarin relocated from the US to UK to head Vodafone 5 years ago. Under his leadership the company increased is revenue and also expanded its footprint in emerging markets like India and Turkey. Most recently, Vodafone was in talks with South Africa’s MTN.
