Sex And The City or SATC

Like Bollywood films Sex and The City has an acronym: SATC. The movie raked in $55 million this past weekend, and some point out that makes SATC the first romantic comedy film to bring in that kind of big bucks.

The movie appears to be the the talk of almost every dinner conversation this past weekend. I heard one group describe how they dressed up in character and went to catch the movie in San Francisco and also had a SATC theme party afterwards. SATC theme parties and Cosmos were quite the rage this weekend across the nation. SATC was “the movie” to watch. There was of course the occasional male who did see the movie like Greg Baxton of LA Times who wrote: “Guys You Can Survive SATC.” Question is how many guys believe Greg?

The one thing that Sarah Jessica Parker and the backers of the movie did right was to market, market, market. There was not a single magazine or an entertainment channel that did not talk about SATC, the costumes, was there or was there not a wedding etc. etc. Why even Oprah had a one-hour show about SATC! And if you missed all this marketing thens surely you did not miss the ads on YouTube? Why, don’t you remember seeing the SATC ads prominently displayed on every page of YouTube? OMG ,OMG, I just discovered SATC has some kind of Facebook page.
I am still puzzled by the runaway success of the movie since I don’t intend to see it anytime soon. What is even more puzzling for me is that I love watching all sorts of Bollywood movies, so why don’t I watch SATC? I don’t hate SATC, but I am mighty puzzled by it all. I have watched a few SATC episodes and quite enjoyed them, but did not seem to be hooked or addicted to SATC.

Maybe the answer is right there in front of my nose and there is really something about the movie and the TV serial that appeals to so many females around the world. Yes, I do love hanging out with my friends. I get the whole friendship bit but don’t know if that is the key reason why folks are hooked to it or if there are other reasons. I have been desperately trying to figure out what is it about the show and the film that appealed to so many millions of female around the world. Maybe I will find my answer one day but until then I intend to read as many articles I can about SATC in the faint hope that I will find my answer.

  1. For me it was that I was single as I watched the show with friends and we could empathize with so many of the situations. Plus you know someone who’s kind of like Carrie, or Miranda, or Charlotte or Samantha…

Then there are the clothes and shoes- so awesome.

Then there is the city – New York – the epitome of fashion, style and cool. http://snurl.com/2bdb2

So, for those reasons, the show is a classic. Don’t know if that helps you, but those are my reasons for being hooked.

  2. Thanks Shripriya for sharing your thought on SATC appealed to you. Hopefully what you said will help me understand a little better the pull of SATC. I do like their opening music…the Latin inspired music is very appealing.

    Hope you enjoyed the film.

    Thank you for writing in.

    Cheers!
