Infosys and USC Set Up Research Center

Viterbi School of Engineering at University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles received funding from Bangalore-based Infosys Technologies to set up a research lab. The new engineering research center known as Center for Research & Education in Advanced Software Technologies (CAST) aims to promote joint research and education.
The areas of focus include software architecture, service oriented architecture and information integration, intelligent systems and agents, mobile and wireless systems, sensor networks and CAD frameworks and tools for hardware and software. Besides research the program aims at promoting internships and distance learning programs.
Infosys has a pretty strong internship program where they get students from some of the top US and European schools to come and spend time in India.
I wonder what sort of roadmap Infosys has for promoting research and development within India besides working with the various IITs? It is a well-known fact that research within Indian universities is lagging and the number of students enrolling for advance graduate programs has declined significantly. There is a clear need for private companies to play a significant role in nurturing and promoting research within India.
