Last week BlogHer, a community of women bloggers, made two major announcements. It received $5 million in funding from Peacock Equity and Venrock, a returning investor. Peacock Equity was co-founded in 2007 by GE Commercial Finance’s Media Communications and Entertainment business and NBC Universal.
The second announcement relates a content partnership between BlogHer and iVillage, Oxygen.com, and BravoTV. com. According to the agreement all three media properties will feature BlogHer content and will also get promotional opportunities across BlogHer’s 2200 women blogs.
NBC Universal’s Lauren Zalanik also announced the launch of Women@NBCU, female-targeted digital ad sales networking program. Zalanik is the Prsident of Women and Lifestyle Entertainment networks for NBC Universal.
BlogHer was launched in 2005 by Elisa Camahort, Jory Des Jardins and Lisa Stone. You can see a short video clip with Lisa Stone, where she talks about the recent funding and what kind of content and revenue share BlogHer has with its network of women bloggers.
Women bloggers have been growing at a nice clip and reportedly there are about 36 million women bloggers according to a recent study by Compass and BlogHer. Given this kind of number and the influence of this segment is it any wonder the corporations and marketers want to target this audience?
