LiveJournal, an open source blogging platform is expanding its footprint in India and recently launched a community for their users in India. LiveJournal has ambitious plans for localization by providing translation and multilingual interfaces to its bloggers and readers. While English is the dominant language for Indian bloggers there has been an increase in the number of language bloggers especially in Hindi and Tamil.
The company along with Caferati recently announced a Flash Fiction competition around the theme “journal.” The competition is open to anyone with a mailing address in India. The last day for submitting your entries is 7th September 2008. The price money for the top five winners is Rs. 19,999, Rs. 16000, Rs 12000, Rs. 8000 and Rs. 4000 respectively. The works of the 100 shortlisted entries will be highlighted on the India Writing Community.
Currently Live Journal has a few million users out of whom a good chunk are based in Russia. In India LiveJournal has about 13.000 users. Interestingly, many of them are located in Bangalore and this could be because Bangalore has a pretty strong open source community and some of the early bloggers in India are from the LiveJournal community.
