Congratulations Kamla. In fact I lost track of your posts for the last few or more months and was catching up with stuff and figured you have moved the website and now have a completely new look. With complete audio/video and blog content. You have indeed come some distance.

Kamla,

Excellent article.

World will be better off if we can have couple of more hubs like Silicon Valley. I am sure there will be interesting places in coming years (especially in few cities of Israel, China, Russia and India).

Silicon Valley will always be unique in much the same way as Hollywood and Wall Street are unique.

As someone rightly said - its more of a state of mind than a place. I hope more cities will try to copy the "state of mind" than the place itself.

I agree with Deepak. Investing purely on fundamentals requires a lot of patience and a belief in the basic honesty of managements. Combining Technicals with fundamentals can give you a better perspective on your investment decisions. Besides since reportedly only 2% of investors in India make money in stocks, we all need fresh approaches to the markets. Great interview and best of luck, Deepak.

Rishi great suggestion about migrating to Twitter...I think Salman Khan will do a great job with that micro-blogging tool. C'mon his movies are not all that bad..I quite enjoy watching them and he does have a sense of humor. How can you *NOT* watch his dance moves? Here is Silicon Valley you should see how many college kids are crazy about the way he dances :-)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I am amazed that his blog actually has meaningful text instead of one big "DUHHH" in caps. Instead of blogging he could start using twit - the next gen blogging platform for twits. Cruel? maybe, but nowhere near as cruel as having to watch one of his movies.

Thanks Shripriya for sharing your thought on SATC appealed to you. Hopefully what you said will help me understand a little better the pull of SATC. I do like their opening music...the Latin inspired music is very appealing.

Hope you enjoyed the film.

Thank you for writing in.

For me it was that I was single as I watched the show with friends and we could empathize with so many of the situations. Plus you know someone who's kind of like Carrie, or Miranda, or Charlotte or Samantha...

Then there are the clothes and shoes- so awesome.

Then there is the city - New York - the epitome of fashion, style and cool. http://snurl.com/2bdb2

So, for those reasons, the show is a classic. Don't know if that helps you, but those are my reasons for being hooked.

Thanks Vishwanath for the update. Yes, it is quite distressing to read about the politics surrounding the fuel price hike in India.

Congrats on your decision to buy REVA...Rs, 300 less than $!0 for driving round the city is a great option. Not only have you reduced your carbon footprint, and also saving money in the process.

I think we all have to learn from you...and your attitude towards working...I guess we all be working for the rest of our lives :-)

Hope your wife is enjoying her trip in NYC.

BTW, Jet is flying from Bangalore to Mumbai and not to Bangalore. There are just a couple that fly to Bangalore: Lufthansa, Singapore, Cathay Pacific (via Thai Airways) as far as I know. And getting a ticket on Lufthanss from here is a challenge.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and writing in.

Cheers!

The situation back in India is not too different.
The Govt is mulling over an increase in Petrol prices here too.
Everyone knows its inevitable.
The oil companies can't be expected to foot the bill for increased oil prices .
They have to pass it on. Figures of Rs 17 per litre or at least Rs 10 per litre have been bandied about.
We are already paying Rs 52 per litre here in Bangalore.
The decision is expected any day now.
I can understand the Govt's reluctance to take this hard and unpopular decision.
Elections are coming. Whoever takes the decision will lose the election.
Unfortunately the Oil companies can't wait till the elections are over.
They would be bankrupt by then.

My Reva battery operated car was a lucky purchase decision.
I have had it for a full five months now and I am congratulating myself for this decision to go for it.

My average increase in electricty bills at home is just Rs 300 per month.
For this amount all my internal mobility within the city is taken care of.
The Wagon R that I still keep and use occasionally would have cost me Rs 3000 instead.

Considering the general price rises, I can't think of retirement now.
I guess I'll just have to carry on as long as the body breathes or as long as I am able to.

Glad to hear abut Jet Airways operating from San Francisco.
It's sure great to have a flight that takes off directly from Bangalore and lands at San Francisco.
My wife is now holidaying in USA. She is in NY these days, and will reach Fremont next month.
I was scheduled to have joined her but work committments kept me back.
May be next year, I may be able to take a break.
It will be Jet Airways for me.

Thanks for the compliment.
You know what?
Back in the late sixties, as a student at BITS Pilani, I was the ghost speech writer for the students contesting the Student Union elections.
All the candidates who mouthed my written speeches during those five years actually won!

I can believe Amitabh's blog is genuine.

I am not wiling to believe some of these stars can actually write.
They can't even talk unless the dialogues are written for them.
Mercifully they can at least read.

It's taken them quite a while to realize the possibilities in this medium and they want to exploit it.
I forsee new star bloggers entering the fray and they will use ghost writers.
They will tell their hired writers their thoughts and leave it to these wordsmiths to do the rest.
Do I see a new job opportunity for me in my retired life?

Thanks Pankaj for taking the time to comment.

The Internet service provider bit came from the press release that I received about MetroMela. Thank you for clarifying that MetroMela is a local information service provider. From what you have described it sounds like your service is a combination of information you gather (through your editorial review) and blend or combine that with deals from "best" retailers in a particular city. Sounds a bit like epinions where people shared their review of a product or service or a deal.

There certainly is a market for local information services and clearly you are trying to address that need and your customers will tell you what they think.

Best of luck with Metromela and appreciate your input.

Cheers!

Hi Kamla,

MetroMela is defnitnely an local information service provider not an internet service provider. There must be a typo somewhere. Would like to add that In addition to the magazine that you mentioned MetroMela also differs from yellow pages type services because it is built to answer questions like "which is best place to get this stuff (for example organic clothes) in the city?". We primarily do that by our own research (editorial reviews) and user reviews. We also list only the city's best merchants in our directory based on our own survey and user's recommendations. Hence a user of metromela can be sure that stores recommended for a query will give him good quality of user experience. Finally to facilitate shopping decisions we carry deals information for our users. What do you think of this approach for ensuring better offline user experience?

regards,
pankaj Joshi

Raghu, the difference between gambling and what we're talking about is that the odds can be stacked in your favour. Even if the house has very small odds in its favour in a casino, it can make lots of money. In the stock market stocks give you much larger odds, depending on your time frame. Technicals help shorter term investors identify stocks where odds are in their favour, rather than just gamble blindly. Fundamentals tend to do the same but to longer term investors - although one has to trust management provided figures. (In technicals - the only thing you trust is price)

Now is this gambling? If it is, all stock market transactions are gambling too. Because implicitly, there is a bet, and there are odds.

What's wrong with gambling is that people play when odds are against them. Like lotteries, or slot machines. Even in blackjack, the game can and has been won by pure skill, by a set of mathematicians - including the famous Richard Feynman - so much that they got banned from most casinos in Vegas. (the house can't handle losing consistently!)

In stock markets, it is indeed legal to have odds in your favour and no one will throw you out. But it takes discipline and strategy to win, just like it does in any other business, but this one has enough data in it to statistically test your strategies in the past. That edge has always been with big money - the institutions, the prop traders and so forth. We intend to level the field and bring it to retail investors as well.

Hope that clarifies!

Raghu, the difference between gambling and what we’re talking about is that the odds can be stacked in your favour.

Hello Deepak,

Good job on the interview and good luck on the venture. As I understand, you are catering to retail investors on helping them buy/sell/hold using technicals. You are basically timing the market with bullish and bearish signals.

Aren't you joining the 'gambling' team that you are against?

Is fundamental analysis involved?

I could be wrong/misunderstood.

Really enjoyed part I of the interview, and look forward to the second half. Your well-rounded analysis posted here complements the interview in a nice way, providing relevant pointers and background analysis. It is nice to see you have done your homework.

Vijayshankar...that is true not everybody gets a chance like Girish. But many time people who do get such opportunities might not end up creating new avenues for themselves. Also, it is not necessary for everyone to go to an IIT to be successful.

Thanks Roshini for pointing me to PrachaartThis.

Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.

Kamla:

Thank you for your honest and excellent interview with Deepak. I especially liked the answer about how entrepreneurship is not the Holy Grail. I linked to this interview in my blog today at the Innovators-Network so more readers can visit your show and read the entire piece for themselves. Best wishes for continued success.

Not sure whether everyone would get a chance like that what Dr.Girish has, earning in IIT Bombay as an Asst. Proff. and also do the dream of what he wants to. A fall back option. On failure. Good luck!
