In Conversation with Vijay Iyer and Rudresh Mahanthappa

VijayRudreshRaw Materials by Savoy Jazz is a new jazz album by Vijay Iyer and Rudresh Mahanthappa. In this first podcast interview by Vijay and Rudresh listen to them talk about Savoy Jazz and how they started working together.

Raw Materials by Savoy Jazz is the first commercially released album by the duo. This is Vijay’s second album released on Savoy.

Vijay and Rudresh met over 10 years ago at a Stanford University Jazz workshop. It was Steve Coleman, a well-known Jazz musician and composer, who introduced the duo to each other. Over the course of the next 10 years Vijay and Rudresh played together, and also worked on their individual projects.

Vijay was named Up and Coming Musician of the Year (2004) by Jazz Journalists Association. Rudresh has been named a Rising Star alto saxophonist by the Downbeat International Cities Poll for the past three year.

Vijay was born and raised in New York and Rudresh in Colrado. Vijay lives in Manhattan and Rudresh lives in Brooklyn, New York.
