The husband and wife team of Hemant Mathur and Surbhi Sahni talk about their passion for cooking and Devi Restaurant. New York’s Devi Restaurant became the first Indian restaurant to win a Michelin Star in the US.

Hemant along with Suvir Saran are the executive chefs at the restaurant, while Surbhi is the pastry chef.

Hemant is a gifted chef whose tandoori repertoire is one of the best in New York. Originally from Jaipur, Hemant spent time working in India, Germany before migrating to the US in 1990s. He mostly worked in New York, except for a brief foray at Turmerik in Sunnyvale, California.

Surbhi studied in India and at New York University after which she worked at DavidBurke, Donatella, Tamarind, Amma and now Devi. Surbhi uses Indian ingredients like curry leaves, coriander in her desserts, and her signature dish is Mango Cheesecake.

The couple and their daughter live in New York.

I mean where else in the USA will you see a huge bill board with Abhishek Bachchan in the USA? Check it our for yourself. 2. [...] It seems only natural that food be the  common theme that bond the two communities in New York on the cusp of their 60th Independence Day. To celebrate this common bond food ifood.tv, South Asian Journalist Association and the Indian-American Arts Council is organizing an event aptly titled “Flavors Beyond Borders,” on August 14th at Utsav, New  York. Madhur Jaffrey will be the guest of honor. Chefs featured for the event include Hemant Mathur, one of my favorite chefs; Hari Nayak, who recently published his cookbook; and the Vikas Khanna.
