In Part 2 of our conversation Mr. V.K. Murthy talks about how he finally managed to work with Mr. Fali Mistry, a well-known cinematographer. Mr. Mistry eventually became the in-house cinematographer for Navketan Films that made Guide, Prem Pujari, Hare Rama Hare Krishna and others.
During the 1950s Mr. Murthy met Guru Dutt during the making of Baazi. When Guru Dutt started his own production house he made Mr. Murthy his cinematographer and thus began a fruitful and creatively satisfying experience for both of them. Mr. Murthy faithfully executed and captured Guru Dutt’s vision, mood and ambience on celluloid. A telling feature of Guru Dutt’s films is the composition of each shot, and the lighting of each shot in the film. The credit for that goes to Mr. Murthy, a brilliant and gifted camera person.
Listen to what Mr. Murthy has to say about his relationship with Guru Dutt, and how they made films. This is a rare behind-the camera interview with Mr. Murthy.
