Sivamani: The Percussionist

Sivamani needs no introduction. This colorful and gifted master percussionist has been playing since he was 11 years old. In this interview recorded in New York Sivamani talks about his passion for music and how he got started. Everything around him inspires him to create music. The conversation is interspersed with spontaneous music that Sivamani creates out of forks, spoons, glasses, plates and whatever else he found on the dining table of Amma.
Sivamani or Siva is currently traveling the US along with AR Rahman.
When he is not traveling, Sivamani lives in Mumbai.

Kamla,
You’ve dug treasure with that piece of interview.
Sivamani is one of my fav musicians and everytime theres something abt him in the news i never miss it. hes a genius - I envy you having met him.
Cheers and thanks for the interview.
Best,
Mani
Thanks for this delightful interview.
I had downloaded it when it first appeared and was hatching it on my Ipod till this Sunday when I got a chance to listen in peace.
Authors create magic with words. Artists create magic with lines and colours. Muscians create magic with notes. Percussionists like Sivamani create magic with simple taps with their fingers.
The sample he gave using spoons was delightful. I paused and re- wound the Ipod twice to hear it again and again.
At breakfast this morning, I was waiting at the table, with two spoons and a plate and suddenly remembered Sivamani. I tried my hand (or rather the spoons) at some rhythm.
All I succeeded in doing was in making an irritating racket. The wife gave me a disapproving frown, wondering what’s come over me all of a sudden and why I couldn’t wait for the breakfast that was still getting ready.
I didn’t tell her that it was not a sign of impatience but that I was suddenly inspired by Sivamani and wanted to emulate him.
Regards
G Vishwanath
Sivamani was an utter delight to talk and watch. I have rarely seen anybody so happy and so genuinely warm and friendly. We did this interview close to midnight right after he had finished his dinner. It was really kind of him to meet us so late in the evening.
Hope you get to perfect your imitation of Sivamani with your forks and spoons.
Thanks for listening.
