In Part-2 of our conversation Mr. Janah talks about how he met and worked with Margaret Bourke-White, the legendary American photographer, who worked for Life magazine. She is credited for the creation of modern photojournalism.

Ms. Bourke-White had seen Mr. Janah’s pictures of the Bengal famine of 1943. She sought to recruit him for her 1945 trip to Andhra — by which time the famine had spread, after sweeping through Orissa in 1944. PC. Joshi, Mr. Janah’s mentor, surprised him one day by bringing Ms. Bourke-White unexpectedly to his work room at the Party headquarters.

A significant part of his repertoire is his large collection of black and white photographs of the various tribal people in India.

Mr. Janah started his career in photography in the 1940s in an undivided India. He is currently in the process of writing a book on his photographs along with the help of his wife, Dr. Sudha Janah and his son, Arjun Janah.

Mr. Janah lives with his wife in Berkeley, California.
