Missed Calls: Jonathan Donner of Microsoft Research India Part-1

A missed call is a free way of communicating using your mobile phone for millions of people around the world. A relatively unknown phenomenon in countries like US or UK, missed call are very popular in India, Kenya, Rwanda, Indonesia, Philippines, Jamaica and other countries. Missed calls also means no revenue for telecom carriers, who are still trying to figure out how to generate revenue from the high volume of missed calls they log everyday.
I turned to Jonathan Donner researcher for Technology at Emerging Markets Group at Microsoft Research India to find out about this fascinating trend of missed calls. Jonathan first came across the missed call phenomenon in Rwanda, Africa and has conducted extensive research on this trend in Rwanda and India.
In part-1 of the interview Jonathan talks about various kinds of missed calls and how this no-cost means of communication evolved in various countries.
