Melek Pulotkonak is COO of Hakia, a 4-year old semantic search startup based in New York city.

I caught up with Melek at the BlogHer conference in San Francisco to find out about Hakia, semantic search engine and how they are different from Google. I also wanted to find out how would semantic search change the way we look for information on the web? What about semantic search and ad networks? What kinds of changes would we see there? Has the time for semantic search arrived? It seems like it since Microsoft recently acquired Powerset for $100 million.

On a personal note Melek has a very interesting background. She is originally from Turkey, and studied in the UK and USA. She worked for a while at the Istanbul Stock Exchange before moving back to the US. She comes from a family of entrepreneurs and her grandfather had a well-known jeweler business in Istanbul. She credits the women in her family for inspiration and for being her role models. Both her mother and aunt are successful business women.
