Academy award winners Damien Chazelle and Justin Hurwitz talk about La La Land, a film that pays homage to Hollywood musicals and French filmmaker Jacques Demy.
Chazelle and Hurwitz were room mates at Harvard Univeristy and they moved to Los Angeles to pursue their dream of making films. While at Harvard they worked together on Chazelle’s first film Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench. They next worked on Whiplash and then La La Land. Chazelle is a trained musician and was deeply involved in the creation of the music for La La Land points out Hurwitz.

La La Land had 14 Oscar nominations and won 6 Oscars. Chazelle won an Oscar for best director, while Justin Hurwitz won 2 Oscars for score and original music. Emma Stone won the best actress award. La La Land won an Oscar for production design and cinematography.

Chazelle wrote and directed the film and Hurwitz composed the music. They have worked together since their student days at Harvard University. Their last collaboration Whiplash for which JK Simmons won an Oscar for best supporting actor.

Damien Chazelle’s beautifully crafted film La La Land hits theatres in December 2016. I saw the film a couple of months ago and instantly fell in love with it. The film pays homage to dreamers, Los Angeles, Hollywood musicals and to French filmmaker Jacques Demy.

Damien Chazelle’s new film “Whiplash” has got lot of positive reviews from the film festival circuit. The film was recently shown at the Mill Valley Film Festival.
We sat down with Chazelle to talk about the making of “Whiplash” that takes you behind the scenes and shows you the blood, sweat and tears that goes into making a successful musician. Draconian is not a word you normally associate with musicians, but apparently that is how some music teachers are, and they drive their students through a tough routine and toss them off if they fail to keep up with the rest of the group. We also talked about Chazelle’s next film project, which is a musical. He has already begun working on his next project.
The film stars JK Simmons, who is a tough music teacher and Miles Teller plays his student, who is hungry to achieve musical success.

The film was part of the Mill Valley Film Festival lineup. “Whiplash” was the film Metallica’s Lars Ulrich chose to show at the festival. After the screening there was a Q&A with Ulrich and Chazelle.
