ORBCOMM-2 First-Stage Landing
On Monday, Dec 21, 2015 Elon Musk’s SpaceX made a brilliant breakthrough that had people talking about it for quite sometime. To say a little bit of space history was created with this breakthrough would be an understatement.
For the first time Space X’s Falcon 9 rocket made “a successful ground-based landing at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station,” as Popular Mechanics put it.
Here is what Musk tweeted:
11 satellites deployed to target orbit and Falcon has landed back at Cape Canaveral. Headed to LZ-1. Welcome back, baby!

Earlier this year, we witnessed how Falcon failed to make a successful landing on sea. Undeterred Musk and his team went back to the drawing board and worked on the project that had a successful vertical landing on land.
So, what does this successful launch mean? For starters it will revolutionize Spaceflight and drive down the cost of space flights. What Musk and SpaceX has demonstrated is that rockets and boosters can be re-used and this will result in huge savings. Then there is the whole question of whether this is the first step towards landing on Mars. Who knows. Musk is bringing all those science fiction ideas to life. Landing on the Mars seems quite possible.
