I sat down to talk with filmmaker Corbett Redford about his debut documentary Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk. This is a rich and dense documentary that traces the history of punk rock in the Bay area from the 1970s. The film released in 2017.
Redford shares how he became involved in making this documentary and why it was important to make this film. He shares how the city of Berkeley and the Gilman Center helped provide a safe place for many young people and punk rock musicians.
Green Day helped produce the film. Redford shares the friendly guidelines that he got from Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong at the launch of the film project. These guidelines were don’t get lost in the acrimony, don’t mystify nostalgia and include diverse voices.
