Janice Engel is the director and producer of the documentary Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins. The film premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and screened at the 2019 SFFILM in San Francisco.
Engel shares how the idea for the film was born and why they decided to make it. The idea for the film was born when Engel saw a play on Ivins in Los Angeles. Kathleen Turner played the role of Ivins, a nationally syndicated political columnist and author from Texas. She was a “First Amendment Warrior,” shares Engel. It was through the play that Engel discovered the story of Ivins.
When Engel and her producing partner James Egan discovered there was no film made on Ivins they resolved to make one. They spent 6 years in researching and making their documentary. Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins releases in US in September 2019.
